La diarrhée est l'évacuation fréquente de selles molles et riches en eau. Généralement, elle constitue le symptôme de certains types de grippes, d'intoxications alimentaires et elle peut même apparaître après l'absorption d'aliments épicés. Si elle n'est pas traitée, la diarrhée peut conduire à une déshydratation.

La diarrhée touche indifféremment hommes, femmes, enfants ou personnes âgées. Elle se caractérise par l'évacuation fréquente de selles liquides, souvent accompagnées de crampes abdominales, de douleurs périanales et de gargouillements intestinaux. La diarrhée est causée par un excès d'eau dans les selles, soit parce que le transit intestinal n'absorbe pas assez d'eau, soit parce que la sécrétion d'eau est excessive ou parce qu'il y a une altération de la motilité. Elle est généralement le symptôme d'une infection causée par une bactérie, par un virus ou par un parasite. Les causes les plus fréquentes de la diarrhée sont les intoxications alimentaires (avec un début fulgurant de diarrhée), les intolérances alimentaires, les infections digestives virales (la gastro-entérite par exemple), l'anxiété , les émotions intenses (syndrome du côlon irritable (I.B.S), et parfois un effet secondaire de certains médicaments (les antibiotiques par exemple).
