La
constipation est un retard ou une difficulté d'évacuation de selles moins
fréquentes, moins abondantes, plus dures que normalement : moins de 3 selles
par semaine. Les

rare des selles. La constipation est sans doute le trouble digestif dont on
se plaint le plus en Amérique du Nord. En réalité, beaucoup de fausses idées
entourent la constipation. Certains pensent que s'ils ne vont pas à la selle
une fois par jour, ils sont constipés. La fréquence des selles dépend de
chaque individu. On parle de constipation lorsqu'il y a moins de trois selles
par semaine. Pour comprendre la constipation, il faut d'abord
savoir que les mouvements de l'intestin et la consistance des selles ne sont pas
les mêmes chez tous les individus. Certains iront à la selle trois fois par
jour, d'autres trois fois par semaine, tout en étant tout à fait normaux. Et
les selles peuvent être plus ou moins dures selon la personne. Après avoir transité
par l'estomac et l'intestin grêle, les aliments atteignent le gros intestin ou le côlon. Long de 1,5 mètre et composé d'une
série de muscles, le côlon pousse les aliments digérés jusqu'au rectum. Le parcours des aliments dans le côlon peut
demander d'un à sept jours. C'est pendant ce passage que les selles se
forment et que l'eau qu'elles contiennent est absorbée en grande partie.
Lorsque les selles atteignent le rectum, il se produit un réflexe, «le
réflexe de la défécation», qui avertit la personne qu'elle doit aller à la
selle. Si on ignore ce réflexe, il disparaîtra en général au bout de quelques
